Gemma Anderson: Jerwood Visual Arts Residency

March 3, 2011

As Jerwood Visual Arts Artist in Residence 2010, Gemma Anderson developed a project which explored practices of drawing in the world of Natural Science, and created the 12 etchings on display as a result. The project was inspired by Anderson's observation of the Jerwood Drawing Prize judging process in July 2010 as a part of the residency, which developed her interest in the unseen current practices of drawing beyond the art world.

Working with Geology, Paleantology, Archaeology, Zoology, Astronomy and Botany (Ethno Botany) departments at University College London, Kew Gardens and The Natural History Museum, Anderson developed a series of drawings made using contemporary scientific equipment and observed directly from the subject. Anderson takes inspiration from nineteenth century scientific drawings by William Hershel, John Emslie, Robert Hooper amongst others. The works explore the shift from practices of drawing observation to the use of digital documentation and the relationship of drawing between subject areas such as Art and Science.
